Burlington votes under new ward boundaries this fall. Four communities change wards

The ward map set by By-law 030-2025 is the one used in the October 26 election. North Tyandaga, Leighland, Palmer and Maple Beach each move to a different ward, and the new map formally takes effect November 16.

What is changing

Burlington's 2026 municipal election is being run on a new ward map. In May 2025, City Council passed By-law 030-2025, which makes what the City calls minor changes to Burlington's ward structure. According to the City's election site, the new boundaries are used for the October 26, 2026 vote and officially come into effect on Monday, November 16, 2026, the day the new Council is sworn in.

Burlington still has six wards. The changes touch Wards 1, 2, 3 and 4; Wards 5 and 6 are not affected. The City lists four communities that move:

Communities moving wards under By-law 030-2025
North Tyandaga
Ward 1 to Ward 3
Leighland
Ward 2 to Ward 1
Palmer
Ward 4 to Ward 3
Maple Beach
Ward 1 to Ward 2

Why the map was redrawn

The changes came out of a Council Composition and Ward Boundary Review that the City ran in 2024 and 2025. The City says the previous review was completed in 2005, when Burlington had about 139,000 residents; the 2021 Census counted 186,948, and the City expects about 265,000 people by 2051. The City says the new structure is designed to accommodate population shifts over the next three municipal elections so that voters are represented equally.

The criteria the City lists for setting ward boundaries are representation by population, future population trends, communities of interest and geographic representation.

What to do before you vote

  • Check your ward using the City's Find My Ward interactive map on the election site, or the new ward structure map (PDF) linked from the same page.
  • Your ward determines which City and Regional Councillor candidates you can vote for and, on Voting Day, which voting locations you can use: there are four in each ward.
  • At the advance polls on October 17 and 20, eligible voters can vote at any of the three advance locations, whatever their ward.
