What is my property zoned?
The City of Burlington’s interactive zoning map shows the zone on a single lot. “Before you can apply for any building, pool permit or business licence, you must get an approved Zoning Clearance Certificate with the City.” (Zoning Clearance Certificates) The zone pages below say what a code is called, where it applies and which part of its by-law sets the rules; exceptions, holding provisions and amendments are written only in the by-law.

Residential Zoning By-law 09-2026
Residential Zoning By-law 09-2026: 440 zone polygons under 8 zone codes on about 3,675 hectares; the most common code is LN8, Low-Rise Neighbourhood 8, on 111. The full tables, map and rules links are on the By-law 09-2026 page.
How this database works
The City of Burlington publishes its zoning map as open data: one polygon per zone, with the zone code and any exception, holding or temporary-use marker. BurlingtonIQ groups the polygons by by-law and code, measures each from its outline, places it in a planning community and ward by a point inside it, names each code from its by-law’s own zone list, and links the part of the by-law that sets its rules. It does not restate what a zone permits.
A code gets its own page when it is drawn on at least 3 polygons covering at least 1 hectare and the by-law identifies it; the rest are listed in the tables only. In places the layer draws one polygon over another without cutting a hole (2 zone polygons, about 0 hectares); both are counted, so the totals can exceed the land they cover. Outlines are simplified to about 3 metres for the maps; a point on a boundary can fall either side.
Left out of the zone counts:
- 4 zone polygons in the By-law 2020 layer: The layer marks these lands “See 1642”. Zoning By-law 2020 (Part 1, s. 1.3) says By-law 1642, as amended, continues to apply to the lands so indicated on its maps.
- 3 zone polygons in the By-law 2020 layer: The layer gives no zone code.
- 2 zone polygons in the By-law 2020 layer: The layer marks these lands “See 4000-3”. Zoning By-law 2020 (Part 1, s. 1.3) says By-law 4000-3, as amended, continues to apply to the lands so indicated on its maps.
- 1 zone polygon (about 7,504 hectares) whose by-law field reads “Inactive”: The layer's own type value; the polygon's zone field reads “Dev Cont Area”. Zoning By-law 2020 (Part 1, s. 1.2) does not apply to lands subject to Niagara Escarpment Development Control.
