Meetings, agendas and live streams

How does council make its decisions?

Burlington has five standing committees of Council: Audit, Budget, Committee of the Whole, Council Workshop and Pipeline to Permit. They provide a forum for public input and make recommendations to Council on issues in their areas. All seven members of Council sit on the standing committees; the Audit Committee also has community members, and the Pipeline to Permit Committee also has stakeholders and community members.

Procedure By-law 059-2024 sets the rules of order for Council and its committees.

Where do I find agendas and minutes?

Agendas, minutes and videos for Council and the standing committees, dating back to January 2018, are on the Council and Committees Calendar. Standing committees meet before each Council meeting. The City aims to publish committee agendas about seven to 10 days before the meeting and Council agendas about five days before, and to post videos and minutes within 24 hours.

For agendas and minutes from January 2009 to December 2017, call 905-335-7777, ext. 7698, or email clerks@burlington.ca.

Having your say

How do I speak at a council or committee meeting?

Register as a delegation with the City's online form by noon the business day before the meeting, or by noon on the Friday for a Monday meeting; delegations are heard in the order they register. Speakers get 10 minutes at a standing committee and five minutes at Council. Meetings are held in person at City Hall, 426 Brant St., and delegates who cannot attend can arrange in advance to take part by Zoom. Presentations and handouts go to clerks@burlington.ca by the same deadline.

To speak about something that is not on an agenda, a member of Council must sponsor the item, generally 12 days before the meeting, so contact your ward councillor first. If you already spoke at committee, you may only bring new information to Council.

How do I send council written comments or a petition?

Email clerks@burlington.ca, mail the Office of the City Clerk at 426 Brant St., PO Box 5013, Burlington, ON, L7R 3Z6, or use the City Hall drop box on Locust Street, saying which committee and agenda item your comments are about. Comments must include at least your first initial and last name; anonymous submissions are not distributed. Petitions are accepted on matters on an upcoming standing committee agenda.

Correspondence, petitions and presentations become part of the public record and may be attached to meeting minutes posted online; your signature and contact details are removed before public distribution.

No. Following the adoption of the Better Regional Governance Act, 2026, Halton Region says the Halton Regional Chair is now a Provincially appointed position and will not appear on the ballot. How do I check that I am on the voters' list?

Check online through the City's voters' list look-up. Being on the list makes voting faster and means you get a Voter Information Letter in the mail with your online Voter Registration Code and in-person voting locations. To be added, removed or corrected, submit an Application to Amend the Voters' List (EL15) in person, with valid identification, at a City library or the Service Burlington counter at City Hall.

You can also add or change your information when voting in person, but to vote online the EL15 must be submitted at a City library or City Hall.
