A polygon that straddles a planning community line is counted wholly in the planning community holding its interior point. Polygons outside every outline are in no row.

The answer

About 18,283 of the 18,283 hectares drawn on the City of Burlington’s zoning layers fall inside one of 22 planning communities. The groups are each by-law’s own, and the by-laws do not share categories, so a row can mix them. Records checked October 8, 2026.

Method, sources and what is left out

Every zone polygon in the City of Burlington’s zoning layers carries a code; its by-law’s zone list puts the code in a group. BurlingtonIQ measures each polygon from its outline and assigns it to the planning community whose outline contains a point inside it, so a polygon that straddles a line is counted once. Shares are a group’s hectares over the planning community’s zoned hectares. Where the layer draws one polygon over another, both are counted.

Left out: polygons outside every planning community outline, and roads, which the layers do not zone. The groups are the by-laws’ own headings, not land-use categories: an employment zone can hold offices or a warehouse. The zone pages say what each code is and where it applies; the City of Burlington is the only binding source on one property.
