Burlington school boundaries: what the public board has decided for 2027 and what is still under review
New southwest Burlington elementary boundaries start in September 2027. A Grade 9 change between Burlington Central and Nelson is recommended but no decision is posted, and the Northeast–Alton review is aiming at September 2028.
The details
Three Halton District School Board (HDSB) boundary reviews affect Burlington families in the next two school years. One is decided, one has a staff recommendation but no posted decision, and one has not started. This page sets out what the board has published on each, as of October 11, 2026.
Southwest Burlington: decided, from September 2027
On June 2, 2026, HDSB trustees approved Option 14b (modified) from Board Report 26039. It sets new English and French Immersion boundaries for Burlington Central Elementary, Central PS, King's Road PS, Lakeshore PS, Maplehurst PS, Pineland PS, Tecumseh PS and Tom Thomson PS, with implementation starting in September 2027.
- Legacy exemptions: affected students who, as of June 2027, would be in Grades 5 or 6 at Central PS, King's Road PS or Tom Thomson PS, or Grades 5 to 8 at Tecumseh PS, may graduate at their current school, with transportation.
- Kindergarten to Grade 4: affected students at Central PS, King's Road PS, Tecumseh PS or Tom Thomson PS are guaranteed approval of an Out of Area Transfer Request to graduate at their current school, without transportation, if the application is submitted by January 29, 2027.
- Siblings: younger siblings of legacy-exempt students may request courtesy bus seats until the legacy student graduates.
The board also resolved that a formal Program and Accommodation Review will be needed to reduce surplus space and move this area to a kindergarten-to-Grade-8 model, once new provincial Pupil Accommodation Review Guidelines are released and board policies are updated. It has not set a date for that review. Questions about the southwest review go to SWB_Review@hdsb.ca.
Burlington Central–Nelson: recommended, on the November 3 agenda
Trustees started this review on June 2, 2026, after feedback during the southwest review about Tecumseh PS students being directed to different secondary schools. It covers the English program only. Students in the part of the Tecumseh PS catchment east of Guelph Line now go to Burlington Central for Grade 9, while their peers in the adjacent Tecumseh PS neighbourhood go to Nelson.
On September 9, 2026, the board told Tecumseh PS families that its steering committee recommends Option 1. Under it, students living east of Guelph Line in the Tecumseh PS English catchment who enter Grade 9 in 2027 would be directed to Nelson HS, students west of Guelph Line would still be directed to Burlington Central, and students already at Burlington Central or Nelson would not be affected. The board says the Leighland neighbourhood would still be directed to Burlington Central.
The board's published timeline had trustees considering the recommendation for approval on October 7, 2026, with new boundaries taking effect on September 1, 2027. As of October 11, 2026, the review page does not show a decision. The board's meetings page separately lists a notice cancelling the board meeting that had been scheduled for October 6, and does not say when the recommendation will be decided. Questions go to BurlCen-Nelson_Review@hdsb.ca.
Update, October 30: The HDSB's agenda for its Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday, November 3 at 6 p.m., at the J.W. Singleton Education Centre, 2050 Guelph Line, lists Report 26077, "2026 LTAP Boundary Review (Pathway 2) Processes," under Action Items. One of its attachments is Appendix C, "Recommendation for Burlington Central - Nelson School Realignment Boundary Review." The review page still shows the recommendation "For Decision" as TBD, and the board has not posted a decision. Residents of Halton who want to address trustees must submit the board's online Delegation Request Form by noon on Monday, November 2; the meeting is also livestreamed.
Northeast Burlington–Alton: review starting this winter
Trustees approved starting this review on June 2, 2026. It covers English and French Immersion boundaries in Elementary Review Areas 104 (Alton, Millcroft and Orchard) and 103 (Northwest Burlington). The board gives three aims: consolidating French Immersion, offered at four of the area's six elementary schools, so the program meets its enrolment threshold; moving the Evergreen and Bronte Creek Meadows development areas, now directed to John William Boich PS, to closer schools; and letting students in parts of the Alton community attend a school closer to home.
- Schools that may be affected: Alexander's PS, Alton Village PS, C. H. Norton PS, Charles R. Beaudoin PS, Florence Meares PS, John William Boich PS, Orchard Park PS, Clarksdale PS and Rolling Meadows PS.
- Timing: the board says the review is scheduled to begin in winter 2026/2027 and anticipates changes starting in September 2028.
- Consultation: a Boundary Review Committee with parent members will be set up, and a public information meeting is tentatively planned for spring 2027, with no date set.
The review page lists no options yet, and its steering committee meetings and recommendation dates are marked to be determined. Questions go to NE-Alton_Review@hdsb.ca.
How to check your own address
This site does not map school catchments, because the board sets them and they change through reviews like these. The HDSB's Find Local School tool shows the English and French Immersion home school for an address, and the board advises families moving into a new area to check its boundary review page as well. Rural addresses should confirm their school through the board's School Locator, or by emailing planhalton@hdsb.ca. The Catholic board's boundaries are not covered here.
